In 2003, Aprendo Contigo decided to take its educational and recreational program to the children living at the Posadita del Buen Pastor despite the fact that it wasnt a hospital, because the abandoned HIV positive children were not being accepted into regular schools and were not being educated. The goal was for them to have access to education through the program and to prepare them so that in the future they could join a regular education system.
Throughout the years, the children who finished elementary school were reintegrated into the regular school system without any problems and achieved above average academic performance.
After eight years of hard and rewarding work, the goal was achieved and we were confident that what was taught to them would serve as a good basis for reintegration and adaptation to the situation they now have to deal with. At this center, an active method was applied in multi-grade classrooms. Aprendo Contigo helped 22 of the 32 children living there, from newborns to 16-year-olds, with elementary education. We had three multi-grade classrooms, each of which had a teacher in charge who was helped by teacher aides. Once a week, on Fridays, an art workshop was offered.
